2023-11-22 | Santu Mofokeng: a duo exhibition with David Goldblatt 'Beyond the Binary' at The Walther Collection space in Neu-Ulm, Germany

We are happy to share about the our fellow's Santu Mofokeng duo exhibition with David Goldblatt 'Beyond the Binary' at The Walther Collection space in Neu-Ulm, Germany.

Two of the most important South African photographers of the 20th century, Santu Mofokeng (1956–2020) and David Goldblatt (1930–2018) are often seen as signaling opposite ends of the aesthetic/authorial spectrum. Representing two generations—one born in the 1950s, a post-war child of apartheid-era segregation and classification; the other in the 1930s, before the advent of National Party rule and World War II—it is tempting to position them through the polarities of Black and white, African and European, poor and rich, deprived and privileged, as if these designated social positions determined their ways of picturing the world. Their work too can conveniently be corralled into oppositional categories: the poetic versus the prosaic, the visionary versus the realist, the subjective view versus social commentary, the spiritual versus the secular.
