2026-05-14 | Razia Barsatie: lecture at Ars Aemula Naturae in Leiden
On Sunday, 17 May, at 16:00, our fellow Razia Barsatie is giving a lecture ‘Sporen van Controle en Vrijheid: Materie die spreekt en herinnert’ ('Traces of Control and Freedom: Matter that Speaks and Remembers') at Ars Aemula Naturae in Leiden.
In her lecture, she takes you through her work and its relationship to the theme of freedom, within the context of the exhibition Freedom.
We live in freedom here every day, but freedom is less self-evident than we think. This is the reason for ARS to tackle this theme. Freedom is never unambiguous. It can be experienced as a right, a struggle, a privilege, or an illusion. It lives in the body and in the mind, in the personal story and in collective history. Freedom raises questions: where does it begin, and where must it be limited? For one person, freedom is boundless movement; for another, it is finding something to hold onto.
The lecture will be introduced by Noah Stewart , a renowned artist, on behalf of the Songs of Freedom Foundation .
Additionally, Panthero Toney provides a musical backdrop with inspiring Afro-Caribbean and Konpa influences.
This program is a collaboration between ARS and Songs of Freedom.
