Dominique Fontaine

Dominique Fontaine is a curator, researcher, cultural advisor, project manager and Founding Director of aposteriori, a non-profit curatorial platform researching, documenting, developing, producing and facilitating innovation in diverse contemporary art practices.
Dominique Fontaine graduated in visual arts and arts administration from the University of Ottawa (Canada). She studied curatorial practices at the De Appel Stitching Curatorial Training Programme (Amsterdam, the Netherlands). Her ongoing research, "Evidence: Inter-documentation", surveys Contemporary Visual art practices by Black artists, curators, critics, theorists and art historians as a response to a gap concerning the accessibility of updated material on diverse artistic propositions from Africa and its Diaspora. Since 1992, she has curated and organized several contemporary art events in Canada and abroad. In 1998, she co-founded AfricAmerica to promote artistic and cultural exchanges between Africa and the Americas. Her recent curatorial projects included “Images, Imageries, Imaginaires International Photography Exhibition of the World Festival of Black Arts and Cultures 2010, "Forms and topographies: African Cityscape in flux", Thessaloniki Biennale:2, 2009; "Moshekwa Langa: Unlimited", Art Star Video Biennial, August 2005; "Zineb Sedira", Art Star Video Biennial. Currently, she is preparing the travelling exhibition Great Future! Her writings have been published in many exhibitions catalogues, among them Art Star Video Biennial, 2005 and 2003; Politicas de la Diferencia: Arte Iberoamericano fin de siglo, "Politics of the Difference: End-of-century Iberoamerican Art", 2001; WWF 01, 19th World Wide Video Festival, 2001; In the meantime, De Appel, 2001; Dak'Art '98, Biennale de l'art africain contemporain, 1998. She has done field research in Africa, Europe, North America and the Caribbean. Dominique Fontaine is a member of IKT - the International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art.
