Guy Wouet

2022


Guy Wouet, born in 1980 Cameroon. He is based in Antwerp and Douala.


He studied sculpture and painting in Douala and was a resident at the Thami Mnyele foundation in 2006 before attending the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in 2009-2010. He graduated from the University of Paris 8 as well as from Erg, cole de Recherche Graphique in Brussels, where he also teaches.


Wouets work always encompasses elements of social criticism, questions surrounding borders, migration and symbols of domination in an era of globalisation. Using history as a source of material, Woueté blends records of experience, emotion, feeling in collages, installation, performance, video and photographic work. He also works in sculpture, painting and makes artists books.


His work has been exhibited at many museums and art events such as the University of Fine Arts (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam), MKHA (Antwerp, Belgium), S.M.A.K (Gent, Belgium), Museum de Lakenhal (Leiden, The Netherlands), KANAL-Centre Pompidou (Brussels, Belgium), Beursschouwburg (Brussels, Belgium), the Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Brussels, Belgium), De Brakke Grond (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), the Biennale of African Photography (Bamako, Malí), the Lubumbashi Biennale (Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo), the National Museum Yaound (Yaound, Cameroon), the Biennales of Dakâ Art (Dakar, Senegal), the Biennale of Havana (La Habana, Cuba), the Enough Room for Space (Drogenbos, Belgium) and the Spazzju Kreattiv (Valletta, Malta) among others.
