Mihret Kebede

2012

Mihret Kebede was born in 1975 in Dessie, Ethiopia and gratuated from the painting department of the AAU School of Fine Arts and Design with distinction.

Since graduation, in addition to painting, Mihret has also worked on installations using different materials such as fabrics, threads and shoelaces.

Most of her art works start from herself and her thoughts. She is well known in particular for her work in which she utilizes her own menstruation blood for her ongoing diary. On the question what Mihret wants to express through her art she says: What I think about society and the way of life in this world.

Mihret is working as a studio artist and director of Netsa Art Village, a platform for young artists in Addis Ababa, of which she is also a founding member.

Mihret paintings and installations have been exhibited in Africa and America.

Currently Mihret is working on the project "Slow Marathon" in the Scottish town Huntly which will be accompanied by the symposium "Walk Sans Frontires". Her project reflects on the contradiction between appeals to slow travel in the face of climate crisis and the reality that many face: a world of closed borders and visa restrictions.

Mihret Kebede will be a guest of the Thami Mnyele Foundation arriving on 20th of march.
