Quentley Barbara
2023
In collaboration with the CBK Zuidoost for the project 'Revolte, Zwart verzet in beeld', (opening on the 26th August, on the occasion of the South East Parade), we are happy to welcome a new Thami Mnyele Award winner Quentley Barbara. He will stay in our residency for the month of August. Barbara was awarded with the residency award in collaboration with CBK Zuidoost, curator Renske de Jong and Delano Mac Andrew. Other artists participating in the project are Monika Dahlberg, Frederick Calmes. Quentley Barbara (1993, CW) is originally from Curacao but has lived and worked in the Netherlands for several years. He is best known for his large-scale sculptural portraits made from recycled cardboard and duct tape. These sculptures are often portraits of his family, friends, and relatives. Barbara is a playful and experimental sculptor, who can create intimate pictures. Barbara recent exhibition "Gun Nos Tambe" is political, a multi-layered installation riddled with hidden signs and meanings that appear to people who know them. It invites viewers to look closer, reminding them how appearances can be deceptive. The multi-faceted installation not only captures the tenor of the human body in motion but also demonstrates how it can be viewed as a political entity. In contrast to his earlier work, which was primarily 3D portraiture in the form of a bust, his most recent sculptures depict the body in its entirety as it interacts with the space(s) it occupies. The sixth edition of the South East Parade take place on Saturday 26 August. The South East Parade is the happiest street parade in Amsterdam. During the parade, residents from all parts of Amsterdam walk through Amsterdam Southeast. Various civil society organizations and cultural groups are also participating. The South East Parade's mission is to celebrate the connection between people and cultures and to challenge the participants to show who they are. Anyone who makes a positive contribution to Amsterdam and in particular to Amsterdam Zuidoost can join the parade.
