Rose Kirumira

2003

As soon as art objects are presented in a gallery, people get shy. They can't afford it and just don't dare to visit an exhibition. But if the art is a happening or an idea, a concept, or an art piece without a financial label, then people are curious and dare to come.

Rose Kirumira is one of the leading Ugandan artists. Born in Kampala (1962), she graduated from Makerere University with a Master in Fine Arts in 1992 and is now head of the Sculpture Department at Makerere School of Fine Art.

Rose began her career in ceramics but has since applied herself more to compositions in wood, metal, waste products, concrete and clay. In her work, she transforms traditional objects and images into human forms.

Rose spent the spring of 2003 in the Thami Mnyele Foundation Studio. During her stay, her work was featured in the exhibition Afrika Hier en Nu at CBK Emmen.
