Tarek Zaki
2002
Tarek Zaki (1975) graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo (Egypt) in 1998. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including Haunted by Detail, mounted by art gallery De Appel in Amsterdam in 2002. In his earlier work, Zaki created objects of everyday life (plates, a sink, a bathtub) using plaster and cement, trying to congeal everyday experiences and memories into objects. The objects looked worn and corroded by time. In his recent work, Zaki deals with such themes as the passage of time, civilizations, and seeing the present or future in the perspective of the past. He has created a museum of the future displaying objects and fragments of our age and civilization, which have been exhibited together as if they were artifacts of some ancient civilization (including an old keyboard, electronic circuits, missiles and high-tech weapons).
