2025-04-28 | Jean Katambayi Mukendi: lecture performance at BAC Art Lab, Leuven, Belgium.
Our fellow Jean Katambayi Mukendi will host a lecture-performance on Monday, April 28, 2025, from 19:00 to 20:00 at the BAC ART LAB (Vital Decosterstraat 102, 3000 Leuven). It marks the end of Mukendi's residency, during which he explored the perceptual dimensions of his drawing practice.
Born in 1974 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mukendi was trained as an electrician—a background that deeply informs his artistic practice. His work reveals a longstanding fascination with mathematics, engineering, geometry, and technology. Profoundly shaped by his upbringing in the workers’ camp of his mining hometown and its mechanised environment, Mukendi creates intricate, often fragile installations and drawings inspired by the logic of electrical circuits and technological systems.
The lecture is an initiative of the Contemporary Art Committee and Disegni, with the support of the Research Foundation–Flanders (FWO). The residency forms part of the research project Tracing, Perceiving, developed within the framework of Palettes—an interdisciplinary research group at KU Leuven that explores the perception of images and art through the combined lenses of psychology, philosophy, art history, and the social sciences.
