On Friday September 19, from 17:00 to 19:00, Thami Mnyele Foundation (Bellamystraat 21D) will host an open studio with our current resient Caterina Pecchioli. It is a great opportunity to meet the artist and view the visual outcomes of her research Decolonizing the Gaze: The Colonial Heritage of Italian and International Fashion Design and its Impact on the Collective Imagination. The visuals include a special collaboration with fashion designer Victor Reginal Bob Abbey‑Hart.
Decolonizing the Gaze: The Colonial Heritage of Italian and International Fashion Design and its Impact on the Collective Imagination, which she developed in 2023 during her previous residency at the Thami Mnyele Foundation, in collaboration with CBK Zuidoost and Framer Framed, and which was supported by the Italian Council (11th edition, 2022).
Decolonizing the Gaze is an international, participatory project that brings together artists, stylists, and fashion designers who are Afro-descendant and from countries with a colonial past to critically examine how fashion has historically contributed to the visual construction of colonial ideologies and explores ways to reframe these legacies through material culture and embodied practices. Through this collaborative process, institutions were interrogated for their roles in sustaining colonial aesthetics, while simultaneously opening up spaces for artistic reinterpretation, shared memory, and cultural restitution.
Additioanlly, on Thursday, 18th September from 18:00 to 20:00 there will be a Roundtable at Framer Framed titled Decolonizing the Gaze: The Colonial Heritage of Italian and International Fashion Design and its Impact on the Collective Imagination, with Nefdt, Caterina Pecchioli, Enrica Picarelli, Alessandra Vaccari, moderated by Alessandra Saviotti. In collaboration with Framer Framed and Africa e Mediterraneo.
